Statement from the NHS Student Union

Dear NHS community,

The formation of a racist group at JFK as well as the flying of the confederate flag that have recently taken place are unacceptable. To be clear, the JFK “White Student Union” that was involved in this incident bears absolutely no affiliation to our own Student Union of NHS.

The Student Union wants to make clear that we denounce racism, bigotry, and bullying of all kinds. We stand firmly against the acts of racism, transphobia, and homophobia that have lately ensued. We are committed to making the Northampton High School community a more equitable and safe environment for all students, and we are actively working to fight this kind of hatred.

We strive to center all of our projects around equity. This year, we have formed a union subcommittee that is dedicated to anti-racism and bias work. This subcommittee has been working to ensure that all students are well-represented throughout NHS curricula, and is dedicated to providing resources for students to learn about Black history. We will continue to work to make our school community intentionally anti-racist.

We welcome anyone to join us in the above project or participate in other ways. Our meetings (1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month) are always open to the public, and our email and DMs are always open—we hope you will come to us with any concerns, suggestions, or ideas regarding our high school community.

The NHS Student Union is committed to working to promote inclusion, acceptance, and diversity of different identities.

Sincerely,

The Northampton High School Student Union
