REAL (Racial Equity & Learning) Community Conversation – May 20

REAL (Racial Equity & Learning) is hosting its next community conversation on Thursday, May 20, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Caregivers, educators, students in grades 6 and up, and anyone else connected with the Northampton Public Schools are warmly invited.

The May conversation will use stories collected through REAL’s story project as a jumping-off point. Participation requires no advance reading or preparation. If you’re interested, please email Lesley Yalen for the zoom link. You can also email Lesley with any questions or concerns.

In addition, REAL is collaborating with Camp Equity to offer a two-part Addressing White Supremacy workshop for NPS families—adults and kids!—June 5 & 6 (4:00 to 6:00 p.m. each day). This virtual workshop is for white-identifying families in the Northampton Public Schools who want to address and begin to dismantle their own internalized white supremacy and show up as better allies and antiracists in their everyday lives.

For far too long the work of dismantling white supremacy has fallen on the shoulders of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC); white families in our community need to step up! Several children of REAL families have participated in Camp Equity programs and have *loved* them.

Note that a family registration must include at least one student in grades 5-12 and at least one adult caregiver. Check out more details and register by May 14.

Also, BIPOC families may be interested in Camp Equity’s Healing in Community group taking place July 13 through August 24; proceeds from the Addressing White Supremacy workshop will enable Camp Equity to provide the Healing in Community session entirely free of cost.

Reach out to Annie Salsich with any questions—and please spread the word among your friends and neighbors!
