Two NHS Students Honored with Sojourner Truth Scholarship

Sojourner Truth Social Justice Awards to Seven High School Seniors

Congratulations to NHS seniors Katrina Aquilino and Maya Mintz Coccoluto, recipients of Sojourner Truth Social Justice Scholarship Awards.

Katrina and Maya are among the seven graduating high school seniors from Hampshire and Hampden public schools awarded the $1,500 scholarship, which will be presented at the annual commemoration of Sojourner Truth on Sunday, May 30.

The students receiving this scholarship are Aaron Emil Richmond-Crosset, The Springfield Renaissance School; Salome Moreno, Holyoke High School; Emma Norman, Easthampton High School; Emilia Lambert-Mergendahl, Summit Academy/Amherst Regional High School; Monica Cage, Amherst Regional High School; and Katrina Aquilino and Maya Mintz Coccoluto from Northampton High School.

The recognition ceremony will occur virtually again this year instead of gathering at the Memorial Statue in Florence.  To join the ceremony, contact marcware@hotmail.com to request an invitation link.

The Sojourner Truth Memorial Committee began recognizing Hampshire County high school seniors who completed social justice work that aligned with the vision of Sojourner Truth in 2006. The scholarship program was extended to include Hampden County students in 2017. The awards have grown from two $500 scholarships to seven $1,500 awards this year, with a total of 43 seniors receiving Social Justice Awards.

Funding for this scholarship program comes from local businesses who become Community Support Partners and from other donations. This year an anonymous donor made it possible to award additional scholarships.

See sojournertruthmemorial.org  for more information on the scholarship and past recipients, as well as the committee’s work in honoring the legacy of Sojourner Truth and the abolitionist history of our region.
