Survey: Road Safety around Northampton High, Part 2

TODAY: Please participate in this two-question survey, and share with Northampton citizens who are concerned about pedestrian and cyclist safety around NHS. Survey responses will be compiled and shared with the Transportation and Parking Commission next Tuesday, Dec. 21.

Following the October 6 fatality of a cyclist at the intersection of Woodlawn and N. Elm Streets (Childs Park, across from NHS), more than 600 students, caregivers, staff, faculty, and other Northampton community members responded to a survey about their perceptions and experiences of road safety around the high school. Those responses were shared with the Northampton Transportation and Parking Commission (TPC).

In late November, a trial “No Stopping/No Parking Zone” was implemented to improve crosswalk, bicycle, and car travel sight lines for those going west on N. Elm Street.

The TPC has requested feedback from you before this parking change is made permanent. Your full responses will be shared anonymously with the TPC prior to its meeting on Tuesday, December 21.

At this meeting, an ordinance will also be introduced to prohibit U-turns at the island on Elm/N. Elm Streets (directly in front of NHS, at the crosswalk from Childs Park). Currently, cars pulling out of Woodlawn can only make a right turn onto N. Elm, and traffic flow is impeded by drivers making the U-turn to go eastbound. Both the parking and No U-turn changes will require new city ordinances and are part of a long-term plan to improve traffic safety around the high school.

Thank you for your help!
