NHS Traffic Safety Message

Good Evening,
This morning one of the crossing guards at NHS was struck by a vehicle in what appears to be a hit-and-run incident. The police and an ambulance arrived on the scene and the crossing guard will be medically evaluated.
Superintendent Provost and I have been working with the NHS School Council, PTO, the Northampton Police Department and the Traffic Commission to build support for a comprehensive solution to the traffic situation at NHS. Measures that have been attempted so far include implementing a temporary parking ban and adding and hiring an additional crossing guard.
Tomorrow morning Chief Kasper of the NPD and Donna LaScaleia Director of Public Works will be observing morning traffic patterns at the high school. This is one small step in coming up with a solution to the safety concerns.
I am requesting that drivers increase their awareness regarding pedestrian and bike safety. Please monitor your speed and heighten your awareness as you enter intersections and crosswalks.
Finally, be sure to pay attention to this week’s newsletter or an announcement about forming a parent/staff committee to discuss and make recommendations to improve traffic patterns around the school.
Sincerely,
Lori Vaillancourt
